CMFP Castelfusano: institutions, experts, and students discussing the future of the food market

How do international crises affect the food market? And how can food sovereignty and ecological transition be integrated? These were some of the questions addressed during the debate held on December 16th at the University of the Sea in Ostia, organized by CMFP Castel Fusano.

The event – part of the “SSPICE IT!” European project on food sustainability, with the Metropolitan City of Rome as the leading partner – brought together institutions, experts, and students to reflect on key issues related to the food market.

Francesco Nazzaro, Chief of Staff of the Metropolitan City of Rome, opened the event, stressing the urgency of addressing global system contradictions, such as food poverty and waste, exacerbated by climate change. He also emphasized the role of “SSPICE IT!” in promoting sustainable and ethical practices in food production and consumption.

SSPICE IT!” has led CMFP Castel Fusano Alberghiero to deeply renew the curriculum of eight subjects, integrating key themes such as food waste reuseenergy savings, and resource management. Initially introduced as an experimental initiative, these changes have now become an integral and structural part of the educational offer.

Fabio Ciconte, environmentalist, writer, President of the Food Council, and Director of Chef Futuro, focused the debate on inequalities within food supply chains and the impact of climate change on food production. During the seminar, he answered students’ questions, deepening the issue of waste reduction and advocating for an ethical approach to resource management.

Claudia Pratelli, the Councillor for Educational Policies of the Municipality of Rome, also addressed the topic, highlighting the importance of projects like “SSPICE IT!” in engaging schools in innovative paths that can shape a generation aware of and attentive to global challenges.

Valentina Prodon, Vice President of Municipio XI, responsible for Ecological Transition, emphasized the role of local policies in raising youth awareness by integrating education and sustainable development.

Andrea Morelli, Councillor for Education and Training of Municipio X, was also present, expressing pride in CMFP Castel Fusano’s work, calling it a virtuous example of how local areas can support young people in developing skills related to sustainability and the transformation of the food sector.
